Just a great school

Aside from the high quality of our education – about which you can read more below – perhaps the most important thing is that our school feels like a warm environment. It is a place where you are seen. You can also see this reflected in our two-year bridging period, in which students are given two years to discover which educational level suits them best.

The teachers have an eye for you and do their best to help you. Our 80-minute lesson blocks also help with this. But you also notice it from the extra support which is possible, for instance, with dyslexia or if things are not going so well. At our school, we also find it easy to talk to each other. We consider it important to get to know each other and thereby understand each other better. This way, we create an environment where being different is normal, and that is part of global citizenship!

WORLD-ORIENTED LEARNING

Bilingual education

We offer VMBO-T, HAVO, Atheneum and Gymnasium, both in Dutch and in Bilingual Education (TTO). Bilingual Education means that you follow some subjects in English and others in Dutch. You can also obtain extra certificates with us for English, but also for French and German: for English International Baccalaureate (IB) in England, for the French Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF) scolaire, and for German Das Deutsche Sprachdiplom (DSD).

Bilingual education is organised differently at each level. For example, at our bilingual pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) we've discovered that project-based learning works very well. During a double lesson, students work with a task in terms of content, for example in geography, but in English. That makes it more accessible.

THE WORLD IN

International orientation

Especially in the TTO, but also in the Dutch-language departments, we offer various extra activities aimed at learning more about the world. For example, in the TTO, you participate in the HWC Climate Summit, a collaborative project between English and geography. We take you to the House of Representatives and the European Parliament. You will also connect with peers abroad. During the Globaland XL project, you delve into global issues and brainstorm solutions. In the upper years, you can also participate in a trip to Ghana, where, as part of the project, Smile at School experiencing firsthand what education and global citizenship mean in a different context.

In the upper years, you’ll go on a trip to a European city, such as Berlin, Geneva, Paris or Bonn. Third-year VMBO-T pupils also go on a language trip to Namur or Dinslaken. It’s a great way to discover how much fun it is to speak French or German. Are you studying French or German in the upper years of HAVO or VWO? If so, you’ll also go on a language trip, for example to Lille.

SPACE FOR CREATIVITY

Arts & Culture

We are proud to be a Culture Profile School. Therefore, with us you can, for example, take the subject of theatre and take exams in music and visual arts/drawing. You can also participate in all sorts of cultural and musical activities, such as a visit to a museum or performance, participating in the (Christmas) performance, or attending workshops in choir, orchestra, dance, or spatial design. In addition, we have student/teacher concerts a few times every year, and students regularly give lunch concerts. At the end of the school year, graduating students exhibit their artworks created in visual arts subjects. CKV in VWO 5 also presents a fashion show, HAVO 4 an actual Oscar ceremony, and VMBO-T a multidisciplinary stage performance. Gymnasium 6 presents a theatre performance for CKV based on that year's exam topic.

LEARNING BY EXPERIMENTING

STEM education

We’re also the right place for excellent science education. After all, the importance of subjects such as physics, chemistry, maths and biology cannot be underestimated. We’re proud of our excellent teachers and our superb science lab, which offers plenty of opportunities for interesting experiments. We collaborate with the university and every year we organise a Science Day, where you can really let your creativity run wild on tasks such as building a spaghetti bridge or investigating what lives in the ditch next to the school.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT MORE

Gymnasium

If you choose Gymnasium, you choose more challenge. From the first year, in addition to the VWO subjects, you will receive Latin and Greek. You'll discover exciting stories from mythology, learn to read classical languages (including the Greek alphabet), and develop sharp analytical thinking skills. These abilities will be useful in all your subjects.

The grammar school has its own timetable and offers plenty of challenges. In addition, there are special excursions and joint activities that foster a strong grammar school spirit within the school.

More than lessons

Active learners

Do you want to get even more out of your school days? Don't worry, with us you'll be given plenty of scope to show your talent and make a difference at school. This can be in a choir, drama and music group, or as a technician behind the scenes. But you can also contribute with ideas, discussions, and practical help in all sorts of ways.

For example, you could make your voice heard through the school newspaper, join the Gender and Sexuality Alliance for an inclusive school, or contribute your ideas about art and culture at our school with Kunstblik. But perhaps you'd prefer to join the student parliament: a great combination of organising fun activities and engaging in discussions with class representatives and school leadership. Is there something for you?

FOR & TOGETHER

Active parents

The parents of our pupils also play an active role at the HWC. We believe it is important to collaborate and meet each other. Many parents are involved with their child's progress, help with planning, and talk to their mentor when needed. In addition, a group of parents contributes to discussions on school-wide issues. This can be through the parent committee, which meets with the school leadership a few times a year to discuss matters such as communication and parental contributions. They also organise parent evenings and attend open days. The parent committee can be reached via oudercommissie@hethwc.nl.

In addition, there are parent contact groups per team: a sounding board for education and activities, meeting twice a year with the team leader.

Parents can also contribute through the participation council (MR). The MR discusses subjects such as education, safety, and finances, and contributes to important decisions.
