On 18 June, all VWO 4 students and a number of HAVO 4 students taking Chemistry in their curriculum visited the UvA Science Park. There they participated in the practical session ‘Lab with a Smell’ and were introduced to working in a real university laboratory.
During the practical session, the students made their own esters, fragrant substances that are commonly found in fruit and are also used in perfumes and flavourings. They discovered that different combinations of substances produce different scents.
It was a fun and educational day, during which the students could apply the theory from their chemistry lessons in practice.
