Practical information for the first year of secondary school

EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW

A good start at the HWC

Welcome to the grammar school,

Your adventure at the HWC is about to begin! In the magazine Welcome to the first year of secondary school Read all about the school, discover fun facts, and find handy tips for a flying start.

To help you prepare thoroughly for the new school year, we are organising several introductory and orientation events. Below, we have summarised the most important information for you.

Friday 14 August: collect laptop

All first-year secondary school pupils need a laptop at HWC.

Did you order a laptop through Easy4u? Then you can pick these up at the time stated in the timetable for your class.  Meer informatie vind je in de appendix Easy4u Information and Order Brochure 2026-2027.

If you're unable to pick up the laptop at the designated time, there's no problem. The laptop will remain available at the HWC and can be collected by the student in the first week of school from the ICT department (room 0.34).

Do you prefer to buy a laptop yourself? Then check the Things to consider and points of attention when buying a laptop yourself.

You are still free today.

Tuesday 18 August

The school year is really starting now! You are expected at 9.00 am on this day. Please bring your school bag, laptop (with username and password), diary, pen, and a packed lunch. Your first day of school will end at approximately 1.30 pm.

Throughout the rest of the first school week, a number of special activities are planned – led by the mentors. These activities will help you get to know each other and your team of teachers better. In the first week, you will also have some lessons. You will be informed by email about when each activity will take place; so keep a close eye on your email!

READY FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

Good to know

Magister: your digital school environment

At the HWC, we use Magister. Here you will find your timetable, homework, grades, and other important information, among other things. You log in with the same details as your school account. You will receive the login details this week in a separate email. Parents and guardians will receive their login details at the start of the school year.

Want to know more? Then check out:

We ask parents/carers to indicate in the Magister app whether photos of their child may be used for school communication, such as the newsletter, social media, and the website.

School textbooks and teaching materials

The schoolbooks are ordered by the HWC from VanDijk and delivered to your home during the summer holidays. As soon as the package is en route, VanDijk will send you a track-and-trace code. Please keep an eye on this closely during the holidays.

You will receive other learning materials during the introductory days in the first school week.

Please note: the school textbooks remain the property of VanDijk and must be returned at the end of the school year. Therefore, don't forget to cover all books neatly.

In the magazine Welcome to secondary school you will also find an overview of items that you can still purchase yourself.

READY FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

Good to know

Your own locker
Every pupil will be allocated their own locker. Here you can safely store your coat, school supplies, and mobile phone.

From Tuesday 18 August, lockers will be assigned. This will take place during a mentor session by scanning your school pass at one of the terminals. There are sufficient lockers available for all students.

You open your locker with your school pass. Therefore, make sure you always have it with you. You will receive the school pass in the first school week. Would you prefer to use a different pass with a chip? ICT can link it for you.

School photo
The school photographer will be visiting in September for the class photo. Parents/carers will receive a personal code by email, which can be used to view and potentially order the photos online.

Voor deze service deelt het HWC de benodigde e-mailadressen met Schoolfoto.nl. Heb je hier bezwaar tegen? Stuur dan uiterlijk 3 juli 2026 een e-mail naar adm@hethwc.nl.

School Guide
At the start of the school year, all parents/carers and pupils digitally receive the School Guide 2026-2027. Here you will find comprehensive information about the education, rules and daily routines at the HWC.
