Pupils and teachers from HWC participated in the Mother's Day Run in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel on Sunday 10 May. They ran the 5 and 17 kilometre distances to raise money for an exchange project with Ghana. The proceeds will contribute to the stay of a Ghanaian pupil, Phena, who will be studying at HWC for a month later this year.
The pupils organised the event themselves: from making the plan and arranging sponsorship to designing flyers and a banner, setting up and staffing the stall, and taking part in the run.
Together with the proceeds from the earlier Dam to Dam Run, enough money has now been raised for Phena's plane ticket!
Preparations for her arrival have now been set in motion. The visa is being applied for, accommodation with host families is being arranged, and the programme during her stay is being considered.
Another successful initiative from Smile at School. With this activity, our pupils combined a good cause with a sporting and social day, during which they also learned a great deal about organising such a project.
