Global citizens at the HWC

Educating global citizens, that's something we take very seriously at the Hermann Wesselink College. Global citizens who are open to different cultures and beliefs, respect each other, and learn from each other. With that principle in mind, last month we organised an Iftar meal at school for interested students. A portion of the vmbo-t 3 students also visited the Hervormd Lyceum West to share the Iftar meal together. Wonderful opportunities to (get to) know Islam better and to engage in conversation with each other.

This week, an exchange took place between pupils from the Jewish School Community Maimonides from Buitenveldert and pupils from the HWC. Pupils from vwo 4 who follow the Global Perspectives subject could register for this project in advance. Pupils from Maimonides in vwo 4 also participated enthusiastically.

After being welcomed by the headmaster and two Year 13 students, teachers and students from both schools got to know each other better through a meet-and-greet game. The programme then included workshops on subjects that the small Maimonides cannot offer, namely drama, art, and Global Perspectives.

The exchange aims to contribute to broadening the horizons of pupils from both schools. Particularly at the small Jewish school in Buitenveldert, world politics hits hard, most recently also very physically due to a bomb attack. The pupils discussed big themes in a light-hearted way, in a manner from which many adults could still learn a thing or two.

We look back on a successful meeting which will be followed up on Monday 4th May by a return visit from pupils and teachers from our school to Maimonides.
